Judy Gomberg

Hi Claudia – This is Judy Gomberg–Jodi’s NY friend who just completed-the last phase of the “Best “–possible surgery (and I need my eyes done) –I could ever imagine having. Although our stories are quite different–we clearly stood on the same line when they were passing out genes.

Judy Gomberg
Five yrs. ago I found out that I inherited the BRCA1 genetic mutation from my Dad. I was 53 yr. at the time and immediately had my ovaries removed. First Phew! My husband and I decided that as far as my breasts were concerned careful surveillance was the path we were to follow. He reminded me that I had “healthy” breasts and this type of surgery was devastating. Perhaps to him, as he was the one who was going to walk me in and out of the hospital–and I was the one to go under anesthesia and get myself out. I agreed and reminded him I had a very unhealthy gene that will never go away. So for 5 yrs–almost to the day–I lived from one test result to the other. Every 3 months I had a test or doctors appt.

After my last MRI on April 15, 2010–I looked around the waiting room and decided I WAS DONE. I had my first surgery on June 18–and completed the reconstruction Sept 27th–last Monday. I have never had such an insurmountable sense of relief from anything I have ever done in my life. I feel childlike and everyday is a no school day. I love myself more than ever and may have lost sensation in my breasts–but it was replaced with new sensations all over my body. I am no longer a refugee of a lost war–or a hostage of fate–but a PREVIVOR.

Looking forward to meeting you. P.S. my boobs are beyond amazing and so forth.

Best, Judy Gomberg

Love the tee shirt – I have to get one for my sister – who actually had cancer – she would really appreciate the humor (?) in that. congrats on your decision. I had a similar experience – with MRI’s, biopsies, mamo’s and then finally threw in the towel.
